Hardness does not make quartz immune to damage

GIA places amethyst, a quartz variety, at Mohs 7 and separately warns that abrupt temperature changes can cause fractures. The useful distinction is that scratch resistance does not establish resistance to every cutting or handling stress. Do not interpret a hardness number as permission to use more force or dispense with the approved wet-cutting setup.

GIA also distinguishes treatment-related cleaning concerns for amethyst. If the rough is dyed, filled or otherwise treated, identify that treatment before extending advice intended for untreated material. Do not use chemical or thermal treatment as an improvised answer to a cutting problem. Worked choice: preserve the feature or maximize size?

Imagine a 40-by-30-millimeter patterned slab with a focal feature 6 millimeters from one edge. A centered 30-by-20-millimeter finished outline leaves a 5-millimeter border on that axis before allowance. Moving the outline 3 millimeters toward the feature changes what the design includes, while a larger outline may leave too little room for trimming and shaping.

For an inclusion-bearing quartz piece, perform the same layout exercise from the intended viewing face and inspect the feature from other accessible faces before committing. A two-dimensional outline cannot describe its depth. The decision may be to make a smaller finished object or retain the specimen as it is. A different blade cannot recover a feature deliberately placed outside the retained area.
