Petrified wood calls for stone-cutting equipment, not an ordinary woodworking blade. Begin by identifying the specimen, choosing the face you want to display and checking its dimensions against the lapidary saw’s manual. A wood-like appearance does not establish how the material should be cut.
Understand what is being cut
The National Park Service describes Petrified Forest material as largely quartz, with original wood replaced during mineralization. It also explains that the resulting material is hard and brittle. This is a useful correction to the instinct to treat a fossil log like modern lumber; it does not identify every specimen sold under the same name.
Keep the seller’s description and locality with your project record. If the identification is uncertain, have it assessed before choosing a process. A material guide cannot identify an unknown rock from color alone. Separate the question “what is this?” from “which saw should I buy?”
Cross section versus longitudinal cut
A cross section is a face across the long axis of a log fragment; a longitudinal cut follows that axis. Choose the former when the desired object emphasizes the end profile, and the latter when the goal is a long rectangular or elongated face. These descriptions specify orientation, not a promise that every fossil preserves visible rings or recognizable grain.
The same fragment can present different height and length requirements in these orientations. For example, a roughly 100-by-45-by-30-millimeter piece may offer a 45-by-30-millimeter end face or a 100-by-30-millimeter lengthwise face. Those nominal faces are only geometric possibilities. Fractures, irregular edges, workholding and the exact saw limit determine whether either plan is usable.
Separate the specimen from the shopping category
A small petrified-wood slab may be a trimming project, while a substantial log section can require equipment beyond a compact benchtop saw. Record actual dimensions in the cutting orientation. Include the intended support in your inquiry to the saw maker or cutting service. Describe the finished piece rather than asking only whether the machine “cuts petrified wood.” A helpful answer needs the dimensions, orientation and holding problem, not just the material name.

Plan yield without assuming every slice succeeds
List your desired finished thickness, the allowance for later finishing and the kerf of the proposed blade. The Slab Yield Estimator can organize those numbers. Its output is a dimensional estimate; it cannot see fractures, predict the interior or decide which slices deserve further work.
Consider a simple project budget alongside the estimate. If you need four finished pieces, what will you do if only three suit the design? You might accept a smaller set, buy additional rough or change the layout. Decide before cutting whether the project depends on an exact count or can adapt to the material.
Worked rectangular yield: allow for every cut
Consider an already suitable rectangular blank with 60 millimeters available along the slicing direction. Assume, for planning only, each slab needs 5 millimeters before final finishing and each separation consumes a 1-millimeter kerf. Reserving one separation cut per slab gives 6 millimeters per unit, or at most ten units before any end trimming, holdback or rejected material.
Now reserve 6 millimeters for unusable end material or other project allowance: 54 divided by 6 leaves nine theoretical units. The example shows why dividing 60 by the slab thickness alone would overstate yield. Replace every assumption with your actual dimensions and approved setup constraints; the Slab Yield Estimator cannot identify a sound section or guarantee nine finished pieces.
Questions about cutting petrified wood
Can I cut petrified wood with a wood saw blade?
No. Do not select a woodworking blade because the specimen resembles a log. Identify the stone and use equipment approved for that material.
Should I cut petrified wood across or along the grain?
Choose based on the face you want to display. Compare marked photographs of both orientations and account for the size required in each position.
Will the slab estimator predict my finished yield?
It estimates dimensional capacity from your inputs. It cannot account for hidden defects, unsuitable patterns or material removed during an unplanned correction.
