Opening a geode once aims to create two substantial display pieces. Cutting multiple parallel slices is a different design: each slice may intersect shell, cavity or a changing combination of the two. Because the interior is unknown before opening, do not budget every proposed slice as a complete solid blank.

In a deliberately simplified planning model, imagine a hollow sphere with a centered cavity. A central slice intersects the cavity and forms a ring rather than a solid disk; a slice closer to the outside can have a smaller opening or miss the cavity. Real geodes need not have centered or regular interiors. The model explains why several equal-thickness cuts do not promise several equivalent display pieces.

Use the full outside dimensions

When comparing saws, measure the rock’s outside height in the intended orientation. Do not subtract an imagined hollow portion. The outer shell still has to pass through the planned cutting path, and the support arrangement must remain suitable for the entire specimen.

Three dimensions matter for different reasons. The full exterior determines the size of the specimen presented to the saw. The shell and cavity determine what remains after a proposed slice. The available holding surfaces determine whether an approved workholding arrangement can support that particular piece. A large cavity reduces none of the exterior clearance requirement.

For example, if a 90-millimeter-high specimen lies outside the chosen saw’s documented guidance, an assumed thin shell does not make it eligible. Likewise, deciding to remove only a narrow slice does not reduce the height encountered along that cut. Refer the whole specimen to an appropriately equipped operator when it exceeds guidance; do not plan around rotating oversized rough or improvising support at a cavity.

Keep finishing and sawing separate

A cut face and a polished face are different deliverables. Decide whether you want a natural cavity framed by a finished rim, an entirely unfinished specimen or a particular presentation before researching the next process. That choice helps avoid buying polishing equipment that serves a different project.

For a cutting service, provide a marked photograph and ask what is included: the number of cuts, handling of the halves, approximate material loss and any finishing. Ask the operator to explain uncertain aspects before work begins. Keep expectations about the unknown interior separate from expectations about following your agreed layout.
