For cutting agates, choose the intended finished piece before choosing the first cut. Use a lapidary saw and diamond blade approved for the material, with the specified coolant and workholding. A small cabochon blank and a whole agate nodule can require very different saw capacity.
Choose a banded face or a smaller focal detail
There are two different design questions: which plane through the rough may reveal a useful face, and where the finished outline belongs on that face. Cutting a whole nodule addresses the first; trimming a purchased slab addresses the second. Buying a slab lets you evaluate its visible pattern before choosing a pendant or cabochon outline.
For a worked design example, imagine a 50-by-35-millimeter usable slab with an attractive band close to one edge. A centered 30-by-20-millimeter oval may exclude that band. Moving the same oval toward it changes the composition without requiring another slab cut. Keeping a larger 40-by-28-millimeter outline may include both the band and its surrounding pattern, but allows fewer separate blanks. These are layout choices, not predicted results from uncut rough.
Match the saw to the starting material
A ready-made slab and an uncut nodule should not share the same shopping shortcut. Record the dimensions and intended support first, then consult our cutting-capacity guide. If most of your work starts from purchased slabs, prioritize a comfortable trimming workflow instead of assuming every agate project requires a larger slab saw.

That distinction is a manufacturer application description, not evidence that either design wins every comparison. Check the actual blade specification and the matching saw instructions before purchasing.
Budget material for the whole project
A useful layout includes the finished outline, the surrounding allowance for shaping and the strip of material each cut removes. The kerf belongs in the plan even when it looks insignificant beside the rough. Several adjacent cuts can consume the very band you wanted to preserve.
As an illustrative calculation, six cuts at an assumed one-millimeter kerf consume six millimeters along the slicing direction, before trimming and finishing allowances. Replace that assumed kerf with the documented blade value when estimating your own project. Do not treat a theoretical slice count as a promise of usable jewelry blanks.

Choose the first project deliberately
For a new setup, select ordinary material with a clear intended outcome. Keep the rare or sentimental nodule aside until you understand the controls and the manufacturer’s operating procedure. A modest first project lets you record useful observations without making every decision about recovering an expensive stone.
Your notes should separate surface appearance, layout accuracy and material lost during later shaping. A disappointing pattern reveal is not automatically a machine defect, just as a pleasing reveal does not prove a blade is suitable for every agate. Record the exact saw and blade, rather than only the brand.
Worked choice: buy a slab or cut the nodule?
Suppose the goal is one pendant and two earrings. With a purchased slab, compare the three finished outlines against the usable face, leaving separate kerf and shaping allowances. With a whole nodule, you must first obtain a suitable slab, then make the same trimming decisions. The nodule route adds an uncertain pattern reveal and a separate capacity requirement.
For one small set, our practical preference is to compare suitable slabs before buying a larger saw solely to open rough. For repeated nodule projects, compare an appropriate slabbing setup or cutting service. Choose the route for its starting material and repeat workload; the finished pendant’s small size does not mean the uncut nodule fits a small trim saw.
